Dwayne Johnson Announces Role in Shazam Film

Dwayne Johnson

After leaving fans wondering which role he would play in DC Comic’s, Shazam film; actor Dwayne Johnson has officially announced that he will be playing Shazam’s arch rival, Black Adam.  Johnson used Twitter to share the news with his fans by posting a picture from the comic and tweeting: “Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot.” My honor to become.. #BlackAdam #TheAntiHero #DCComics,” Johnson’s decision to play Black Adam instead of Shazam should come as no surprise, last month Johnson told the Associated Press that he is a fan of anti-heroes and that Black Adam is one of his favorite DC comic book characters.

Black Adam’s character first appeared in 1945 as a predecessor to Captain Marvel  but was reintroduced in the 1970s when DC comics began publishing their Captain Marvel stories under the name Shazam!.  Though Black Adam’s original character was an ancient Egyptian who traveled to modern times to challenge comic book heroes, his current role is that of an anti hero who is fighting to “clear his name.”  DC’s website currently describes the character as, “a champion turned villain whose quest for dominance over all magic drives him to destroy anything that stands in his path.” Black Adam’s powers include super strength, super speed, and magic – making Johnson, who rose to fame as  WWF wrestler, a believable fit for the role. New Line Cinema President and COO, Toby Emmerich said that Dwayne “is such a larger than life character and it just made perfect sense to me that we put him in a DC comic movie….You look at these comic book characters and they have this certain swag and charisma that Dwayne carries with him wherever he is so that’s why this always made sense.  Emmerich also stated that he and the rest of the company “love Dwayne and have had nothing but success with him over the years.”

While many of the other details surrounding the Shazam film have been kept private,  Emmerich and Warner Bros. President of Worldwide Production have confirmed that a Shazam film is in development.  Fans may have to wait as many as six years for the film to hit the screen; however, with Johnson’s announcement and his promise to put 100% into the role, there will certainly be something to look forward to.
