BHuman, a dynamic pop group, released a cover of Cher’s iconic single ‘Believe’ and the video has recently been released as well. The single was redone in a catchy electronic pop way that is beyond powerful in a plethora of ways.

In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, BHuman, made up of members Harrison Scott and Billie Lloyd, opened up about their remake of the track, the group and so much more.

How did BHuman form? 

Harrison – I met Billie at one of her gigs, which coincidentally was at a gay bar right around the corner from my house when she first moved to New York. I think we’d followed each other on Instagram before then, but not really spoken. We were fast friends from there, but it took us like two years to work on anything musically together. I asked her to collaborate on a cover of Hilary Duff’s “Stranger” for my solo album release show and we immediately knew there was a connection.

We just started messing around in the studio until we wrote our first two singles “Safe” and “Goodbye” and we released that we actually had something special and needed to share it with the world.

What can you tell us about your latest single “Believe” and your take on the cover?

Billie – We decided to cover Cher’s iconic song “Believe” for the finale of our performance at NYC Pride this year. Cher is an eternal gay icon and it’s always so fun to have a chance to take someone else’s work and approach it from a different sonic angle. I think it’s a beautiful song about love and loss with a really fun beat, which is basically what BHuman’s music is all about; that juxtaposition.

What do you want new fans who may have just discovered your music to know about BHuman?

H – I think the way we work together is quite unique: Billie is based in London and I’m in New York, so it really is a transatlantic labor of love. We’re constantly passing ideas and songs back and forth, sometimes Billie will send me her singing with just a piano and I’ll completely transform the song through production. It works really well too because Billie brings raw vulnerability in both her lyrics and voice, and we contrast that in the production.

Are there any artists you would like to collaborate with in the future? 

B – I mean, so many! There are a lot of artists we admire in the pop sphere that are doing really amazing things with the genre; Kim Petras, Uffie, Charli XCX, SOPHIE, Caroline Polachek.

H – I’d love to do a K-pop crossover moment with BLACKPINK…they’re incredible.

What are your goals for the rest of 2019? 

H – We have a packed year: We are obviously releasing our second EP, but we’re also hoping to play some more shows in both Europe and the US because the reaction from our first show was so insane! I also have projects I’ve been working on with other artists releasing this year, and Billie is launching the app she’s been working on to help transgender people access safe services.

What can you tease about the EP coming out of this fall? 

H – It’s called BMovie and we really ran with that concept. I watched hours upon hours of 50’s B Sci-Fi and Horror Movies and pulled sounds, samples, and inspirations that we used as glue throughout the album. We structured the album to be almost a fictional movie soundtrack that reveals itself through the song and tracklist, we even start with an overture and a good old fashioned movie intermission.

I think it’s really an album about self-discovery and how we are often working through the alienation and othering we often experience as queer people. As the album progresses, it becomes about finding love and acceptance for yourself and for others around you.

B – This is our first release that really feels like a body of work as opposed to a collection of singles. There are 10 tracks and the cover art is gonna make you scream with joy.
